One of your longtime members, and Past President, Grant Walsh, has applied the approach suggested by the Mutual Association for Protection of Lake Environments in Ontario (MAPLE) to regenerate his shoreline. Grant decided to stop mowing the lawn on the shoreline and let things grow naturally. What is going to grow there? This started a period of discovery. After 3 years and A LOT OF EFFORT (just kidding, he really did nothing), here is what magically appeared on the beach: Canada anemone, Spotted Joe-Pye Weed, Turtlehead, Spotted Touch-Me-Not, Aquatic mint, and many other shrubs. However, when the shoreline is maintained in its natural state, this erosion from wave action is greatly reduced since the roots of shoreline vegetation form a real barrier retaining the soil in place. Water runoff can contain a great deal of fertilizing agents that contribute to the overgrowth of aquatic plants and algae. Thanks to shoreline vegetation, these fertilizing agents are consumed by plants roots before they can reach the water in the lake. This zone with relatively shallow water nurtures a diversity of flora and wildlife. Native plants in the littoral zone are essential to the life of the lake. They absorb various dissolved substances in the water to fabricate organic matter which serves as nourishment to aquatic animals. They also protect aquatic wildlife from light, heat and natural enemies while housing a diversity of living entities. Without aquatic plants, fish would be deprived of a large portion of their food. Aquatic plants also mitigate the effect of waves and as such contribute to protecting the shoreline from erosion. The littoral zone is the most diversified and nutrient-rich zone of any lake. It is home to most of the plant and animal life that resides in the lake. These life forms contribute to the system's ecology. If we disturb this equilibrium, we are endangering the very life of our lake. In order to prevent the degradation of our lake, it is essential to protect the integrity of the littoral zone. We need to ensure the free flow of water under our docks. As soon as an obstacle to the free flow of water in the littoral zone is created, a large number of degradation symptoms appear in the immediate area. They aid in the digestion of food. The presence of fecal coliform bacteria in aquatic environments indicates that the water has been contaminated with the fecal material of man or other animals. The presence of fecal contamination is an indicator that a potential health risk exists for individuals exposed to this water. Fecal coliform bacteria may occur in ambient water as a result of the overflow of domestic sewage as it is a source of human and animal excrement. If a large number of fecal coliform bacteria (over 200 colonies/100 milliliters (ml) of water sample) are found in water, it is possible that disease- or illness-causing organisms are also present in the water. Swimming in waters with high levels of fecal coliform bacteria increases the chance of developing illness from pathogens entering the body through the mouth, nose, ears, or cuts in the skin. Autrement, les eaux de ruissellement peuvent contenir une grande quantité d'agents fertilisants qui contribuent à la croissance des plantes aquatiques et des algues. Grâce à la végétation riveraine, ces agents fertilisants sont recyclés avant qu'ils ne puissent atteindre l'eau du lac. Cette zone aux eaux relativement peu profondes abrite une diversité de flore et de faune. Les plantes de la zone littorale sont essentielles à la vie du lac. Elles absorbent diverses substances dissoutes dans l'eau pour fabriquer de la matière organique qui sert de nourriture aux animaux aquatiques. Elles protègent également la faune aquatique de la lumière, de la chaleur et des ennemis naturels tout en abritant une diversité d'entités vivantes. Sans les plantes aquatiques, les poissons seraient privés d'une grande partie de leur nourriture. Les plantes aquatiques atténuent également l'effet des vagues et contribuent ainsi à protéger le littoral de l'érosion. La zone littorale est la zone la plus diversifiée et la plus riche en nutriments de tout lac. Elle abrite la plupart des espèces végétales et animales qui vivent dans le lac. Ces formes de vie contribuent à l'écologie du système. Si nous perturbons cet équilibre, nous mettons en danger la vie même de notre lac. Afin d'empêcher la dégradation de notre lac, il est essentiel de protéger l'intégrité de la zone littorale. Nous devons assurer la libre circulation de l'eau sous nos quais. Dès qu'un obstacle à la libre circulation de l'eau dans la zone littorale est créé, un grand nombre de symptômes de dégradation apparaissent dans la zone immédiate. Ils aident dans la digestion de nourriture. La présence de coliformes fécaux dans les environnements aquatiques indique que l'eau a été contaminée avec le matériel fécal d'hommes ou d'autres animaux. La présence de contamination fécale est un indicateur qu'un risque de santé potentiel existe pour les individus exposés à cette eau. Les coliformes fécaux peuvent arriver dans l'eau ambiante à la suite du surplus de vidanges domestiques, qui sont des sources d’excréments humains et animaux. Si plusieurs coliformes fécaux (au-dessus 200 colonies/100 millilitres (ml) d'échantillon d'eau) sont trouvés dans l'eau, c'est possible que des organismes qui causent des maladies sont aussi présents. La natation dans les eaux avec les niveaux supérieurs de coliformes fécaux augmente le risque de maladie des pathogènes entrant le corps par la bouche, le nez, les oreilles, ou les coupures dans la peau. It is a normal process, often referred to as the 'aging of a lake'. Over the duration of tens of thousand of years a crystal clear deep lake will eventually be transformed into a murky shallow bog filled with plant matter, possessing very low oxygen concentrations that will only support highly specialized organisms. The catalyst for the eutrophication process is phosphorus. The annual phosphorus input to the lake provides the necessary nutrients for aquatic plant growth. Each year these aquatic plants reach the end of their annual life cycle and sink to the bottom of the lake where their decomposition depletes the water of oxygen. The phosphorus contained within this plant matter is stored in the sediment on the bottom of the lake. The phosphorus continues to be stored in the sediment year after year until the lake enters into a 'mid life crisis' so to speak. In this stage, the lake loses its ability to store the annual phosphorus input due to a severe depletion in the oxygen at the bottom of the lake. The absence of oxygen at the bottom triggers the re-suspension of the stored phosphorus and when this available phosphorus is combined with the annual phosphorus input to the lake, the production of aquatic plant growth increases significantly. The lake now enters into a transition phase - from 'mid life' to 'old age'. The plant matter continues to accumulate on the bottom, the oxygen depletion eventually extends throughout the entire water column and the phosphorus is continually recycled. The lake now begins to resemble a swamp and eventually will cease to exist and become land. Au cours de plusieurs dizaines de milliers d'années, un lac de la pureté du cristal pourra se transformer éventuellement en un marais noirâtre et peu profond rempli de végétation et ne possédant que de très faibles quantités d'oxygène que seuls des organismes hautement spécialisés pourront supporter. Le processus d'eutrophisation est catalysé par le phosphore. La quantité de phosphore fournit chaque année au lac les nutriments nécessaires à la croissance des plantes aquatiques. Tous les ans, les plantes aquatiques atteignent la fin de leur cycle de vie annuelle et tombent au fond du lac où leur décomposition entraîne une diminution du niveau d'oxygène dans I'eau. Le phosphore contenu à I'intérieur de la matière végétale est conservé dans les sédiments situés au fond du lac. D'année en année, le phosphore continue d'être conservé dans les sédiments jusqu'au moment où le lac entre, pour ainsi dire, dans une crise de la quarantaine. A ce stade, le lac perd sa capacité lui permettant de retenir la quantité de phosphore annuelle en raison d'une diminution importante du niveau d'oxygène au fond du lac. L'absence d'oxygène au fond du lac déclenche alors un processus qui libère des particules contenant du phosphore conservé, qui en se combinant à la quantité annuelle de phosphore du lac, entraînent une augmentation significative de la croissance des plantes aquatiques. Le lac entre alors dans une phase de transition de la demi-vie vers la vieillesse. La matière végétale continue de s'accumuler au fond du lac, I'épuisement de I'oxygène peut en bout de ligne s'étendre à I'ensemble de la colonne d'eau pendant que le phosphore est continuellement recyclé. Le lac commence alors à ressembler à un marais et peut éventuellement cesser d'exister pour se transfromer en terre.
